Porsche Goes Green - Hybrid Technology On The Rise

Yes, it's true; Porsche has announced that all their future models will be available with the option of a hybrid-electric drive, which is both a very bold, radical and eco-friendly move. Daniel Semmer, a company insider, spoke about their new hybrid module at Porsche's Panamera Hybrid technology workshop. This new technology shall combine an electric motor and clutches, both into one unit. The module has been designed such that it shall be compatible with and fit into all the future cars that this automobile bigwig is to produce in the years to come.

Porsche's plans for future hybrid technology are nothing short of fascinating. It is reportedly also working on developing an induction charging system that could be installed into domestic garages; induction charging implies that battery would be refreshed without the use of charging cables, only by virtue of being in proximity of the charger. Clearly, Porsche is investing much in making hybrid technology more feasible and accessible to the common man who also has a penchant for luxury. The question is, what is the rationale behind this nature of policy?

The new hybrid module developed by Porsche is actually part of a new philosophy that has garnered much popularity in contemporary times. The idea is to produce vehicles that reduce fuel consumption by significant amounts, while driving at everyday speeds. Porsche engineers have revealed that their new parameter for fuel-saving technology is reducing the engine's 'revolutions per kilometer'. Their upcoming hybrid plug-in Panamera is a product of this very vision; it reduces the frequency of engine revs per kilometer using various driving modes such as conventional start/stop, coasting as well as coasting with engine off, and pure electric mode.

The new Panamera will not be released in the market till late the summer, but plans for the next-generation Panamera model, due in 2016, are already underway. It is expected to be equipped with better plug-in transmission, and a new all-wheel drive platform called MSB which will set it apart and above its contemporaries such as Bentley.

Porsche is also attentive to the need for efficient driving by minimizing driving paths and routes. The next generation Porsches, due in 2016-17, shall interact with their surroundings, roads and terrain much more intelligently. Information from detailed road maps would be used to measure inclines more accurately and the radius of oncoming corners, as well as determining the most suitable driving mode - electric, hybrid, sports or charging-while-driving - for given topographic and road conditions.

The bottom line is that Porsche is now going green and attempting to evolve new and improved technologies for ensuring optimal fuel efficiency. The fact that a high-end luxury brand is also becoming more and more concerned with fuel economy, is reflective of the growing consciousness of and need for environment-friendly automobiles which help in cutting down running costs as well. If this trend continues, and other car manufacturers adopt an all-hybrid policy like Porsche, we can expect even better performing, stylish and luxurious cars in the future.
